This Monday the owner of the hostel came and said that her contact at the hiring firm OPT4 needed three guys and two girls for work the next day, and I told her directly that I was interested. At the evening we went to the OPT4 office, that only was a couple of blocks from the hostel to sign up with them, in order to work for them. It turned out that we were working through OPT4 for a road company, and I was assigned to traffic control, i.e. stopping and starting the traffic according to orders over a walkie-talkie, when one lane of the road was closed, so that a clean up team could clean up and suck up water after the earthquakes and flooding we’ve had. However I didn’t get to work much, because the first stretch of road we set up, they didn’t need, because it was only a rock and some mud stopping the water from flowing away, and they lifted that out in less than a minute, and the second stretch they didn’t need us, because it was enough room at the side of the road for them to park their tank truck and work safely. It was only at the last stretch they were doing that day that they needed us, so it got quite boring siting in the car all day watching others work, but at least I got paid. |
